1. 表示所有關(guān)系，用以構(gòu)成名詞的所有格，如the gate of the school（校門），the secret of success（成功的秘密），等?！　?/p>

注意以下正誤表達(dá)：　　

正：He is a friend of my father. 他是我父親的一位朋友?！　?/p>

正：He is a friend of my father’s. 他是我父親的一位朋友?！　?/p>

正：He is a friend of mine. 他是我的一位朋友?！　?/p>

誤：He is a friend of me.　　

以下表達(dá)是錯(cuò)誤的：　　

誤：What’s the name of you?（改為…your name）　　

誤：Do you know the father of him?（改為…his father）　　

誤：I will show the books of me.（改為…my books）　　

但是以下表達(dá)卻是對的（of表示動(dòng)賓關(guān)系）：　　

正：I hate the sight of him. 我討厭看到他?！　?/p>

正：His criticism of her is serious. 他對她的批評是嚴(yán)肅 的?！　?/p>

2. 與 age, shape, size, colour, height, design, weight 等名詞連用，可用作表語或定語；其中的介詞 of 有時(shí)可省略。如：　　

The two boys are (of) the same height. 這兩個(gè)男孩一樣高?！　?/p>

Here is a piece of wood (of) the right size. 這有一塊木頭，其大小剛好適合?！　?/p>

When I was (of) your age, I lived in the country. 我像你這個(gè)年紀(jì)的時(shí)候，我住在鄉(xiāng)下?！　?/p>

3. 與某些名詞（如help, value, interest, importance等）連用，相當(dāng)于形容詞，可用作定語或表語。如：　　

It’s not of much value. 這沒有多大價(jià)值?！　?/p>

This subject is of great interest to me. 這門學(xué)科對我來說是很有趣的?！　?/p>

The dictionary is of much help to the students. 這本字典對學(xué)生幫助很大?！　?/p>

4. 與 hear, talk, know, speak 等動(dòng)詞連用，表示一種間接性，大意為“涉及到”。如：　　

I’ve never heard of anyone doing a thing like that. 我從未聽說有人做過那種事?！　?/p>

Mary is talking of looking for another job. 瑪麗說起要另找一份工作?！　?/p>

I don’t know the writer, but I know of him. 我不認(rèn)識這個(gè)作家，但我聽說過他。　　

People spoke of their fear as the flood waters rose. 人們說起看到洪水上漲時(shí)的恐懼。

5. 與表示動(dòng)作的名詞或動(dòng)名詞連用，表示動(dòng)賓關(guān)系。如：　　

The writing of the letter took me three hours. 寫這封信花了我3個(gè)小時(shí)。　　

Loss of health is worse than loss of wealth. 失去財(cái)富比失去健康更糟?！　?/p>

6. 表示比較范圍，意為“在……當(dāng)中”。如: 　　

Of all the choices, this is the best. 在所有選擇中，這種最好?！　?/p>

Of the two coats, the black one is the better. 在這兩件外套中，這件黑色的更好些?！　?/p>

7. 與 careless, clever, cruel, foolish, friendly, generous, good, impolite, kind, nice, polite, right, rude, selfish, silly, stupid, wise, wrong等表示人的品行和特點(diǎn)的形容詞連用，用于 It’s+adj.+of sb (to do sth) 句型。如：　　

It was kind of him to wait. 多蒙他好心等候。　　

It was silly of you to believe him. 你相信他是愚蠢的。　　

It was foolish of me to forget. 我真蠢，竟然忘記了?！　?/p>

It’s unfair of him to criticize me. 他批評我是不公平的?！　?/p>

It was generous of him to pay us. 他付了我們錢，真慷慨?！　?/p>

It was selfish of him not to contribute anything. 他很自私什么也不捐。

It was careless of you to leave your camera in the taxi. 你把照相機(jī)留在計(jì)程車?yán)飳?shí)在太不小心了。
